Our Story
The first organized service of the body of Christians to become known as New Hope Baptist Church took place on Sunday evening January 23, 2000, in the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Park Avenue. That evening the realization began to be impressed upon those gathered that God was calling out a new Body of Believers – faithful to core Christian values and theological belief.
On March 5, 2000, the Holy Spirit and 488 faithful, worshiped our reigning God in a glorious inaugural Sunday morning service at the Baptist Temple. The worship service was highlighted with the Choir’s rendition of “I Bowed On My Knees”; and Rev. Lee Hammond presented an inspired message on restoration, reconciliation, and forgiveness. This marked a “new hope”; a new beginning and renewal of the Holy Spirit pouring out blessings and opening doors of opportunity for this faithful body to do His good works and begin sharing His message of love and forgiveness throughout the community.
On May 14, 2000 the name “New Hope Baptist Church” was chosen to identify our Church. Charter Sunday was celebrated on June 25th as 528 Charter members committed to New Hope. July 23rd witnessed the Church approving an option to purchase 18.5 acres on Rosemar Road to build a multi-purpose sanctuary. On Oct 15th groundbreaking ceremonies took place at the new building site and the headline in the Religion section of the Parkersburg News announced, “Reaching Out to the Unchurched.” The 23,000 square foot facility was designed to see over 400 worshipers with a full complement of classroom space for Christian Education. Construction of the facility was completed during the summer of 2001 and worship services in the new facility began in August.
Many, many memorable events and services have taken place over the years. We continue in constant prayer that we will always seek God, that God will make His will known to us, that we will hear and obey Him, and that God will continue to bless and expand this dynamic Body of Christ. New Hope’s mission was and continues to be to fulfill the Great Commission and Great Commandment. Our vision to achieve this mission is centered around the biblical functions of His church for that mission: evangelism, edification, service, and worship. Win the lost to Christ (evangelism). Develop strong discipleship (edification) within our Christian community; while addressing the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the broader community so as to show Christ’s love (service). And provide for Christian fellowship and community through the innovative, relatable, informative presentation of God’s truth based on God’s Word (praise & worship).
Acts affirms that, if we fulfill these commandments and do these functions of the church, His Kingdom will be multiplied: ‘Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied.’ – Acts 9:31 (NKJV)
